Aruba Climbs Into Conde Nast's Top 10 List

In diving, it's not good to climb the charts, but in tourism, it's great! Aruba was just featured as #7 in the list of "Top 10 Caribbean Islands" in the November issue of Conde Nast Traveler. That is the first time that Aruba made it to the esteemed top 10 list. They expect to inch closer to that top spot next year! (Editor's Note: We've always thought Aruba was a Perfect 10!)

A Whale of a Time in Aruba!

Talk about your Big Fish! This photo was no fluke. It was snapped by Patrick O'Neill in Aruba at the Antilla Wreck. Patrick reported that the visibility that day was striking, the water was full of fish, and the coral was colorful. On the last of his three days of diving, he swam with a 15 foot long whale shark that approached the dive boat. All the gear had been put away when this beauty appeared under the boat in 25 ft. of water. He and others grabbed their masks and snorkels to see this magnificent creature up close.

The Red Sail Sports divemaster on the trip reported, "This is my first experience with a whale shark and I've been diving in virtually every site throughout Aruba for 11 years."

Some fun facts about the whale shark:

    1. The whale shark is the biggest shark and the largest fish.
    2. It's NOT a whale!
    3. Its mouth can be up to 4 ft wide and its average size is 25 feet long.
    4. Because whale sharks are filter feeders, they're harmless to people and usually indifferent to divers.
    5. This enormous shark sieves large amounts of plankton to eat through its gills as it swims.
    6. It has been estimated that whale sharks may live up to 100-150 years.

    A Post Hurricane Ivan Interview
An interview with Rod McDowall, Operations Manager, Red Sail Sports Grand Cayman.

    Q. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT REBUILDING AFTER HURRICANE IVAN? A. We were fortunate. Our boats sustained very minor cosmetic damage and our buildings remained intact. The whole Red Sail Sports crew pulled together. I was and continue to be very proud of their efforts and teamwork. Everyone worked tirelessly in our clean-up efforts. I'm sure the staff is looking forward to swapping brooms for their dive gear!

    Q. SO WHEN WILL YOU REOPEN FOR BUSINESS? A. We're already taking cruise ship passengers on snorkel and dive trips. When the island open again for visitors on November 20th, we'll be open for business as well on November 21st.

    Q. WAS THERE ANY DAMAGE TO THE REEFS? A. The dive sites on the wall and the shallow reefs along Seven Mile Beach are in great shape! Most of the debris that got into the water was closer to shore and has already been removed. The Tourism Association has been organizing beach and reef clean-ups. But the visibility is great and plenty of fish life. Not to mention, the Stingrays at Stingray City remain at their posts and eager to greet snorkelers.

    Q. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD? A. We'd like to thank our loyal customers for all their good wishes and support. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Grand Cayman very soon!
